Callan said: “The season really gets going now, this is the exciting part. For me, the Craven Meeting is the starting point of the season!
“I’ve got three decent rides on the first day of Newmarket.”

Bretton Wood
The market is dominated by the Godolphin-owned duo Hallasan and Al Qudra, ridden by William Buick and James Doyle respectively for trainer Charlie Appleby.
But Callan has netted an impressive chunk of prize money at this course over the years with 19 wins and he gets on board Bretton Wood, trained by James Owen, who is one of the big outsiders in the field.
This is a classic two-year-old race where anything can happen in the quick sprint to the finish, with many often needing the run to get that experience.
Bretton Wood has some incredible pedigree to match so can’t be discounted.
Callan added: “I’ve been doing quite a bit of work with him at home. He’s not overly big but I think he’s got the ability for a race like this.
“Normally for these two-year-olds when they come to Newmarket, they’re unraced, they haven’t been tested, so you’re kind of going into the dark.
“Clearly, he’s very well-bred though but we don’t know what we’re taking on. It will be interesting to see how he performs on his first time.”
The Amazon
Callan explains: “I ride one of James Tate’s in the Maiden as well, The Amazon.
“A really nice horse when I was riding it last season but has had a couple of niggles and needed a bit of time, so this is his 1st run, as a three-year-old.
“If he shows anything like he showed last year, I think he’s got a very promising season ahead.”
Tate won this race back in 2019 and this colt has been waited with until ready, with a price tag of 150,000gns as a two-year-old so will come with a lot of ability.
Only In Jakarta
There’s two at the head of the betting in this contest with Eye Of Dubai and Brunel Nation, with the rest of the field starting at around 8’s, which is fronted by Only In Jakarta.
The colt has showed promise in defeat and finally got off the mark at Newcastle stepped up to 7f and is unexposed over this distance on just his second run of 2024.
Callan adds: “I ride another one for Kevin Ryan in the Handicap, Only In Jakarta, a winner in his last start on all-weather.
“His form on the turf last year was good as a two-year-old. He’s coming here as a winner; Kevin Ryan’s horses are in good form.
“We’ve got three good chances on Tuesday, which will hopefully start the season off with a bang!”
Hi Royal
Callan looks ahead to racing on the second day of the Craven Meeting with two more rides: “On Wednesday, I ride Kevin Ryan’s Hi Royal. Last season, Hi Royal was a very credible second in the 2000 Guineas.
“His form since then has been a bit hit and miss against some lofty opposition but it’s his first run of the year after his first wind op.
“We’re hopeful that this makes him come out strong and show what he’s capable of doing. It’s a race I’ve won before, a very competitive race but it’s open.
“I’m hoping he can replicate his massive run in last season’s 2000 Guineas and it would be great if he could strike whilst the iron is hot early in the season.”
Ambiente Amigo
“Then, I’ve got a filly for James Owen called Ambiente Amigo, she’s been working really well. She was highly regarded last year; she’s a nice filly and we’ve got a lot of hope for her.”
