WWE legend The Undertaker reduced his on-screen brother Kane to a blubbering wreck on the latest episode of a podcast thanks to an iconic story of an in-ring mishap.
Wrestler-turned-politician Kane, real name Glenn Jacobs, was barely able to speak at one point during the episode of Six Feet Under, the Deadman’s YouTube series.
Jacobs had himself intended to share the story that concerns his long-time wrestling colleague, setting the scene of Raw’s 1000th episode back in 2012.
He got far enough, explaining that The Undertaker had come to Kane’s rescue after he’d been left outnumbered by a clutch of WWE villains in the ring.
Explaining he’d gone to bat for the segment backstage with company officials who were scrambling for time on the show, he said: “The deal was that I go down to the ring and the ring is surrounded by various bad guys who are about to attack Kane, but then there’s the ‘Bong’, and out comes The Undertaker, with his full entrance, to the rescue.
“The Undertaker gets in the ring and takes care of business – that’s how this thing was pitched. The show was running late, so [I told them], ‘I guarantee you, we’ll get this done in less than five minutes… we’re professionals!”
The pair were given the thumbs up and things had been going plan, up until the point Undertaker tried to remove his weighty ring jacket.
“Mark [Calaway – Undertaker’s real name] gets out, he’s The Undertaker, he’s got his big jacket on, he does the whole [entrance]. Then he gets in the ring and goes to take the jacket off.
“He was wearing those big MMA gloves, and the sleeves somehow get wrapped around the gloves, he’s in a straitjacket!”
At this stage in the storytelling, the 57-year-old began to laugh uncontrollably, forcing his co-star to take over.
Undertaker added he’d had no such previous issues with the garment, explaining as Kane repeatedly cracked up in the chair next to him: “At Mania, I dropped it off my shoulders, held my arms straight and the thing fell straight to the floor. Beautiful.
“This time, when I flipped it off my shoulders, instead of falling, it folded. When it folded, it was as if someone put a lock and chain on it, because I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh.’
“I’m trying to be discreet and I’m reaching across. They’re shooting me [on camera] and the more I tug, the tighter it gets.
“It’s got me. I’m stepping on the back of the coat, trying to pull my arms out and it’s just getting tighter and tighter. I’m in a panic.’
WWE’s camerawork during the live broadcast is to be commended. Though it was noticeable that the legend had trouble dropping the coat from his body initially, they immediately cut away to wrestlers at ringside and the 18,000 strong crowd while The Undertaker grappled free himself of the coat for well over a half a minute.
The Phenom realised he’d get no help from Kane – who was at this point in the podcast beside himself.
“I’ve realised I’ve got myself in a situation that I’m gonna need his help to get out of,” said Undertaker of his former tag team partner.
“I’m looking at him for some words of encouragement, and all I see is, ‘Oh, s***!’
“Now they’re shooting the audience… finally, Nick Dall jumps up on the apron and he’s tugging [at the coat] and I’m bouncing on the ropes.
“It was the worst job I ever did. That coat kicked my a**.”
The Undertaker and Kane battled as rivals and partners across their storied careers. The latter made his WWE debut in 1997 as Taker’s estranged brother.
They wrestled each other at the following year’s WrestleMania before working together as friend and foe over the next decade.
Jacobs has been the Mayor of Tennessee town Knoxville since 2018.
