Louis-Rees Zammit is doing a little bit of everything with the reigning Super Bowl champs.
Catching passes, blocking defenders, returning kickoffs, posting photos on social media … it’s been a busy beginning for the former Wales rugby star, as LRZ attempts to make the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster out of training camp.
“Stackin’,” Rees-Zammit tweeted, attaching an hour glass to a post that was viewed more than 50,000 times.
It is to be determined as to whether ‘Rees Lightning’ is cut out for the NFL after stunning rugby fans and leaving his primary sport behind.
But as Week 1 for the Chiefs gets closer, a 6ft 2in running back who weighs 209 pounds and is a 23-year-old rookie is receiving helpful advice from a Super Bowl winner.
Isiah Pacheco ran for 935 yards and seven touchdowns last year, while becoming a two-time SB champ in an offense led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
As the heat kicked in during 2024 camp, Pacheco praised an effort from Rees-Zammit, but also tried to keep steering the inexperienced rookie forward.
“Good strike,” Pacheco said. “We got to work our base.”
Then the third-year pro — who made the NFL as a seventh-round pick out of Rutgers — pulled in closer to Rees-Zammit and coached up the former rugby star.
“We got to work our base — me as well,” Pacheco said.
“When we’re striking, we widen our legs so much, and then I’m opening up and I’m losing ground.”
Rees-Zammit nodded while wearing a heavily padded helmet, agreeing with what he was being told by a new teammate.
“We both can help each other out by keeping our base,” Pacheco added. “Getting square and keeping our hands moving.”
Kelce has already spoken highly of Rees-Zammit, who is adapting to an entirely new sport while attempting to process a loaded playbook filled with foreign calls.
LRZ previously said he chose the Chiefs because of all the possibilities within Andy Reid’s dynamic offense.
“When you step into the facility, you just feel like you’re going to win,” Rees-Zammit said.
“They obviously have all the Super Bowl trophies straight ahead of you and everyone in the building is so confident, they’re so chatty, you just feel like a belief within the facility itself.
“When I went in there I was just blown away.”
NFL fans will feel the same if the Wales native scores regular-season touchdowns alongside Mahomes and Kelce in 2024.
Kansas City opens a new season by hosting Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in an AFC Championship rematch on Sept. 5 at Arrowhead Stadium.
If Rees-Zammit takes the field, Pacheco’s training camp advice will have paid off.
“It’s a big deal, obviously, going into a big locker room of NFL players — 90 players, and I was probably the 90th player,” Jacksonville special teams coordinator Heath Farwell exclusively told talkSPORT.
“The biggest thing is just trusting your skills and what you’ve done and what you have the ability to do. And just staying focused on every single play of getting better.”
