Inter Miami can expect their shirt sales to sky rocket after Lionel Messi modelled the club’s new retro third kit.
That’s if everyone feels the same way about it as Inter Miami owner and football icon David Beckham, who could not hide his delight at the vintage-inspired strip.
The club announced the kits’ launch in a post shared across their social media platforms, which shows superstar captain Messi donning the teal-striped jersey, which features a white and orange trim.
With the city name printed across the chest in an Art Deco font, a nod to the iconic Miami Vice television series, the stylish number forms part of MLS’ all-new ‘Archive Collection’.
In collaboration with manufacturer Adidas, five of the league’s teams have been assigned retro-style third kits, with LAFC, LA Galaxy, Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers the other lucky recipients.
Each design draws on the club’s history and the city they represent, as the vibrant colours of the Inter Miami strip reflect that of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
And franchise owner Beckham was quick to promote the new release, as he took to Instagram to signal his approval.
Alongside a photo of Messi in the kit, the Manchester United and England legend wrote: “I mean we have some great jerseys @intermiamicf ridiculously cool.”
It will surely not be long before the popular piece of kit sells out, if the past success of Inter Miami merchandise is anything to go by.
In June, the MLS announced that Messi’s iconic number 10 shirt had ranked as the league’s top-selling Adidas jersey for the second year in a row.
The arrival of the Argentine superstar in the Herons’ set-up in July 2023 has resulted in a surge in the popularity for the US top-flight, which has brought with it significant financial benefits too.
Reports have indicated a remarkable 17 per cent growth in league sponsorship and a 15 per cent increase in club sponsorship revenue during this time.
Inter Miami’s first team players will debut the third kit on Saturday, July 20 during the match against Chicago Fire FC.
It may be a while before Messi dons the trendy new kit on the pitch however, after he was forced to leave the field early with a nasty-looking ankle injury in Argentina’s recent Copa America final win.
