England and Spain will contest the Euro 2024 final on Sunday night in Berlin.
England secured victory in their semi final on Wednedsay night with yet more late drama, as Ollie Watkins scored a 91st minute winner to complete the turnaround from an early 1-0 deficit to book his country’s place in the final, when the tie seemed destined for extra time.
The semi final was the first game that Gareth Southgate’s side have won in 90 minutes since their opening day 1-0 victory over Serbia, having drawn both of their other group games.
Despite picking up just five points, the Three Lions finished top of Group C, earning a Round of 16 clash against Slovakia, who finished third in Group E, in which Jude Bellingham scored a 95th equaliser to send the match to extra time, in which Harry Kane scored the winner.
The quarter final saw England come from behind once again to snatch a draw against Switzerland thanks to an 80th minute Bukayo Saka equaliser, before Southgate’s men scored all five of their penalties to secure victory in the shoot out.
Spain have been the standout team at these championships so far and head into the final as favourites having knocked out France and Germany in the last two rounds.
Luis de la Fuente’s side have won all six of their matches so far at Euro 2024, and were the only team to win all three of their group games at the entire tournament.
The Spanish finished comfortably top of a group which was considered to be the ‘Group of Death’ which contained defending champions Italy, 2022 World Cup semi finalists Croatia and Albania, but when all three games with a relative degree of comfort.
La Roja‘s knockout phase started off well too, coming back from a goal down to dispatch Georgia 4-1 before ousting the hosts Germany with a dramatic 119th minute winner in the quarter final, to set a semi against France, in which they came from behind to win 2-1.
England, historically, have the better record between the two times, leading the all-time head-to-head 13-10, though have lost five of the nine meeting this century, but the last five have been split evenly with two wins apiece.
The two nations haven’t met at international level since England’s 3-2 Nations League victory in Seville back in 2018.
