Harry Kane was forced off in England’s Euro 2024 quarter-final win over Switzerland after colliding with Gareth Southgate.
The Three Lions’ skipper had led the line through the 90 minutes and into extra-time when a bizarre injury spelled the end of his game.
Following a clash on the sidelines with Man City centre-back Manuel Akanji, the Bayern Munich striker was sent flying into the England technical area where he collided with his manager, Southgate.
Kane then tumbled over a cooler box before remaining on the floor, with the entire England bench getting to their feet, as well as the row of fans sat directly behind the dugout.
Clutching his leg, the England skipper appeared in some discomfort before the decision was made to replace him with Ivan Toney.
With the quarter-final clash well on the way to penalties with the score level at 1-1, the knock was a big blow to England with Kane surely Southgate’s top pick for a shootout.
Kane had endured a difficult night having struggled to make an impact against Switzerland.
In talkSPORT’s live watch-along, Jamie O’Hara was critical of the Bayern Munich star, saying: “Kane is doing absolutely nothing. The only reason he’s still on the pitch is because of penalties.”
But after colliding with the England boss, O’Hara added: “Southgate should have kept hold of him and put him on the bench.”
Kane did end up being brought off, but not for the reason O’Hara would have wished.
Thankfully for England, Kane wasn’t missed in the penalty shootout as the Three Lions advanced to the semi-finals of the competition with five perfect spot kicks.
Cool finishes from Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold meant the Three Lions have progressed to the semi-finals in consecutive European Championship tournaments for the first time.
Kane confirmed after the match that his tumble merely triggered some cramp in his leg, which saw him replaced by Toney.
It means the skipper is likely to lead the line again in the final-four, where England will face the winner of Netherlands vs Turkey.
