Carlos Alcaraz secured a five-set victory to see off Frances Tiafoe, but was more preoccupied with his beloved Spain’s Euro 2024 score.
The reigning Wimbledon champion had to work hard to progress into the fourth round of the competition, having twice sat a set behind the American on Centre Court.
Thankfully for Alcaraz, he was able to fight back to a 7-5 2-6 6-4 7-6 6-2 victory to advance.
While victory over the spirited Tiafoe was a clear relief for the Spaniard, the three-time Grand Slam winner was more preoccupied with how his country were performing at the Euros.
As Alcaraz played on centre court, Spain had kicked off in their Euro 2024 quarter-final clash with Germany, leading Annabel Croft to ask him post-match: “I can’t let you go without mentioning a certain football match that’s taking place right now.”
“What’s the score? What’s the score?” he asked.
As a member of the crowd confirmed that it was 0-0 at the time, Alcaraz smiled and said: “0-0? Alright, alright,” with a laugh.
Asked if he’s going to watch the match, Alcaraz said: “Yes, of course. I’m going straight to put the match (on) and support Spain.
“I think it’s 30 minutes in so let’s go for it and see how it’s going to be.”
While Alcaraz has done his bit to advance at Wimbledon, Spain also faced a tough task as they looked secure a place in the semi-final of Euro 2024.
They took the lead against Germany through Dani Olmo who converted from Lamine Yamal’s assist, to put the Spaniards in control, only for Germany to level the game to take it to extra time.
No doubt, he’ll be hoping that his nation can finish off the job.
For Alcaraz, his primary focus will be on going all the way at the All-England Club.
Alcaraz claimed his first-ever Wimbledon title in 2023 when he defeated Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller.
However the Spaniard was unable to beat the 26-year-old who put in a spirited performance on centre court.
Alcaraz was hoping to win his second grand slam of the year having come out victorious at the French Open last month.
