Luke Shaw could finally return from injury when England face Slovakia at Euro 2024 on Sunday.
Manager Gareth Southgate took a gamble in taking the 28-year-old to Germany given he hadn’t played football since February.
It had looked like the decision had backfired with the Three Lions boss forced to pick Kieran Trippier in the role for all three group stage fixtures.
That is despite the Newcastle United star nursing a calf issue himself, and being predominantly right-footed.
However, just as hopes began to fade about Manchester United full-back Shaw’s availability, the player himself offered a promising update.
As England stars left the stadium after their frustrating 0-0 draw with Slovenia, he was queried on his return.
And Shaw replied: “Next game.”
The news will come as a big boost to both Southgate and England fan, who have quickly fallen out of love with the team.
Dull and dreary performances against Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia, have seen the nation go from pre-tournament joint-favourites to almost certainly also-rans.
Trippier at left-back led to a lack of width on that flank, leaving Southgate’s team appearing lop-sided and out of sorts with Phil Foden floating into an attacking midfield role.
Now though, with the last-16 clash with Slovakia confirmed, England can, apparently, finally call on their No.1 left-back.
Southgate could also make other changes with Foden currently absent from the squad to attend the birth of his third child.
Meanwhile, in central midfield, Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo will have given his manager food for thought with a positive display after replacing the dogged Conor Gallagher at half-time.
