Germany vs Hungary predictions
Germany could not have asked for a better start to Euro 2024.
If we leave aside the special pan-continental edition held three years ago, no host or co-host had ever won the opening game of a European Championship by more than a one-goal margin. They kicked off the Europe tournament with a bang, and they’re inching closer to knockout stages.
Germany would have been forgiven for having a few nerves as they raised the curtain on this month-long sports extravaganza on Friday. Many of their supporters would have settled for a victory of any kind.
As it was, it turned out to be a stonking one. Germany blew Scotland away at the Allianz Arena in Munich, running out 5-1 winners to kick-start their campaign in style.
Needless to say, there is still a long way to go. The Scotland team, moreover, were poor and had an already-difficult task complicated when they went down to 10 men towards the end of the first half.
You can only beat what is in front of you, though, and Germany did that with aplomb. They dominated from first whistle to last, landing 20 shots on the Scotland goal and conceding none (Scotland’s late consolation went in off the head of Antonio Rudiger).
All of which means that Germany are one win away from qualifying for the knockout phase. A triumph here would keep them in firm control of Group A with one game remaining.
Finishing top ought to be beneficial. That would set up a clash with the runner-up of Group C (perhaps Denmark or Serbia) in the last 16. Coming second would potentially see Germany face Italy or Croatia in the first knockout round.
Of course, if they play to their potential then Julian Nagelsmann’s side are capable of beating anyone in the competition. A host nation with momentum behind it can be difficult to stop.
Germany have done nothing yet, but they can take a step closer to realising their ultimate objective by beating Hungary on Wednesday.
Germany vs Hungary betting tips
Germany will be looking to make it two wins from two when they take on Hungary this Wednesday. This is what bookmakers have in stores for us.
Germany/Germany half-time/full-time – 31/40 (talkSPORT BET)
Hungary were tipped by many as potential dark horses going into the European Championship, but they were curiously flat in their first match.
A 3-1 loss to Switzerland has left them in a vulnerable position. Another defeat here would leave them on the brink of elimination, especially if their goal difference was to take a hit against the hosts.
It looked like the occasion got to Hungary on Saturday. It was their first tournament game outside Budapest for eight years.

They may actually find it easier to cope with this match since Germany are strong favourites and there is less expectation on them.
But if they start similarly slowly, Nagelsmann’s side are well equipped to take full advantage. Germany played with intensity from the very start against Scotland and they will look to do the same here.
Nagelsmann will want a lead at the interval and his players are more than capable of establishing one. While there’s some merit to considering Hungary, the best wager to place in this rivalry is still going to be Germany.

Germany clean sheet – 5/6 (Betfred)
In fairness to Hungary, they did show more fight in the final 30 minutes of the game with Switzerland. Yet even then, it was not as if they created an abundance of golden opportunities. Marco Rossi’s men managed just two shots on target in total.
Their best opportunities came from crosses into the box, but in order to repeat that against Germany they will first need to get possession high up the pitch.
The hosts delivered a masterclass in counter-pressing on the opening night. Try as they might, Scotland just could not get up the pitch.
If Hungary try to play out from the back, Germany will back themselves to force turnovers in advanced areas. If the Hungarians go long, the aggressive centre-back duo of Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah should be able to clean up without too many problems.
This proactive form of defending can help Germany keep a clean sheet on Wednesday.

Jamal Musiala to score any time – 7/4 (bet365)
Jamal Musiala was Germany’s standout performer against Scotland. Playing on familiar territory at the Allianz Arena, the Bayern Munich attacking midfielder was at the top of his game.
Musiala scored one goal, set up another and delivered an all-round superb showing. Together with Florian Wirtz and Ilkay Gundogan, he continually found space in between the lines as Scotland struggled to close off the gaps.
Having watched Scotland’s sub-par efforts, Rossi will no doubt compel his players to be more compact without the ball.
However, that is easier said than done when Germany’s attackers are pulling you in different directions.
Musiala may be primarily known as a creator of chances, but he actually scored more goals (10) than he provided assists (six) in the Bundesliga in 2023/24. The 21-year-old can get on the scoresheet again here.
