Türkiye vs Georgia predictions
Ahead of the last European Championship three years ago (it was delayed by 12 months due to the coronavirus pandemic), Turkey were widely tipped as potential dark horses.
As it turned out, they were one of the biggest disappointments at the tournament. Defeats by Italy (0-3), Wales (0-2) and Switzerland (1-3) saw them fall at the first hurdle, exiting the pan-continental event with zero points to their name and the worst overall goal difference.
Turkey must show this summer that they have learned lessons from Euro 2020. A strong tournament showing is long overdue.
Turkey finished third at the 2002 World Cup and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008. Since then, they have won just one game at a major event. They failed to qualify for the World Cups held in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022, and missed out on Euro 2012 too.
All of which represents a poor record over the last decade and a half. Turkey is a football-mad nation with a sizeable population of 85 million. It is time they made their mark on a European Championship again.
Despite the scars of 2021, hopes are high this time around. The draw could have been much worse: Portugal are likely to win Group F, but Turkey will back themselves to finish second ahead of the Czech Republic and Georgia.
They will be among the best-supported countries in Germany, where a large Turkish diaspora will be supplemented by thousands of fans flying in from Istanbul and beyond. At some of their games it will feel like Turkey is actually the host nation.
That fanatical support can be a double-edged sword, however, and one of the key question marks over this team is whether they will be able to handle the pressure. Indeed, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that Turkey came up short mentally as well as technically and tactically at Euro 2020.
Türkiye vs Georgia betting tips
The penultimate game on matchday one of the Euro 2024 group phase pits Turkey against Georgia.
Turkey to win – 8/11 (bet365)
Georgia are the sole debutants at Euro 2024. They finished second-bottom of their qualifying group, behind Spain, Scotland and Norway, yet earned a second chance thanks to their performance in the most recent edition of the Nations League.
Georgia beat Luxembourg 2-0 in the play-off semi-finals, then shocked Greece with a penalty shoot-out victory in the final.
Ever since that win on March 26, Georgians have been counting down the days until this clash with Turkey.

Willy Sagnol, the former France full-back, is the man in charge of the transcontinental country. He will be under no illusions as to how tough it will be for Georgia to get out of their group, but simply being in Germany is a success story for this nation of 3.7 million.
Turkey, you feel, will ultimately have too much strength for Georgia. It would be a surprise if Vincenzo Montella’s men did not start with a win at Signal Iduna Park.
⚽ Select a Turkey victory at 8/11 with bet365 ⚽
Over 2.5 goals – 6/5 (Sky Bet)
At club level Montella’s teams have tended to be easy on the eye. The most notable example was his first spell at Fiorentina, when his team played some of the best football in Serie A.
There is plenty of technical quality within this Turkey team too. They will dominate possession here, while without the ball they will look to press high and force turnovers high up the pitch.
Georgia may therefore go direct rather than building up from the back. Their strength is in transition, with star man Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Napoli set to be tasked with leading many of their breaks forward.
Turkey can be vulnerable defensively, especially when they do not get the timing of their press right. We saw that in March, when Austria ran out 6-1 winners in a friendly against Montella’s charges.
This may well end up being an open game, which is good news for neutrals as that means goals should be on the cards.
⚽ Go for over 2.5 goals at 6/5 with Sky Bet ⚽
Kerem Akturkoglu to score any time – 12/5 (VBET)
Turkey shared the goals around in qualifying to a remarkable extent.
Twelve different players were responsible for their 14 strikes, with Cenk Tosun and Kerem Akturkoglu the only squad members to find the back of the net more than once.
The former is the favourite in this market for the clash with Georgia, but the odds on the latter are hard to pass up.
After all, Akturkoglu is coming off the back of an excellent season at club level in which he scored 15 goals for Galatasaray in all competitions. Only Mauro Icardi got more for the Turkish champions.
Akturkoglu is a wide forward rather than a central striker, but he should still get himself into scoring positions against Georgia.
⚽ Choose Kerem Akturkoglu as an anytime scorer at 12/5 with VBET ⚽
