Austria vs France predictions
France are the second-favourites to win Euro 2024 with many bookmakers, although some now rank them level with England in joint-first.
In this writer’s view at least, France are very much the team to beat this summer. Their squad might not have quite as much star quality as England (Kylian Mbappe aside, of course), but it is better balanced overall.
Indeed, while England’s defence is an obvious weak point, William Saliba – perhaps the best centre-back in the Premier League in 2023/24 – is likely to be a substitute for France this summer.
Les Bleus also possess a solid track record over the last decade or so. In three of the last four major tournaments, they have reached the final.
The exception was an underwhelming last-16 exit at Euro 2020, but France once again demonstrated their quality when they finished second at the World Cup 18 months ago.
Didier Deschamps has been central to their success in recent years. Throughout virtually every European Championship and World Cup, the long-serving France manager has been criticised for supposedly shackling a gifted side.
It is true that France have seldom played free-flowing, enterprising football in the Deschamps era. Even against a counter-attacking Morocco team in the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, France had just 38 percent possession.
Yet international football is different to the club game. Few teams at this level use the same sort of complex, coordinated attacking approaches that we tend to see in the latter stages of the Champions League.
Deschamps’ focus on defensive solidity frustrates many, but he long ago reasoned that keeping things tight at the back and looking to your attacking players to provide moments of magic in the final third is a recipe for success when you consider that France almost always have a talent advantage.
Anyone expecting France to dazzle at Euro 2024 will be disappointed. Yet as we have seen at previous tournaments, that does not mean they will not be there or thereabouts.
Austria vs France betting tips
Second-favourites France will be looking to start with a win at the European Championship.
Draw at half-time – 11/8 (Betfred)
Austria would have hoped to be drawn in an easier group – this one also contains the Netherlands and Poland – but no one should write them off.
They were impressive in qualifying, finishing just a point behind Belgium and nine clear of third-placed Sweden.
Ralf Rangnick is the man at the helm these days and he has overhauled Austria’s style of play. Franco Foda’s risk-averse approach has been replaced by Rangnick’s usual high-octane, heavy-pressing game.

Deschamps will be wary of playing into Austria’s hands, so do not be surprised to see France go longer than usual when they build up from the back.
It could take les Bleus a while to find their rhythm given this is their first competitive match in 2024. Do not be surprised if the score is still level with 45 minutes on the clock.

Both teams to score – 16/19 (VBET)
Austria scored in each of their eight Euro 2024 qualifiers, highlighting one of the key improvements overseen by Rangnick.
In fact, if we take a look at their record in all competitions, Austria have not drawn a blank in any of their last 17 fixtures.
Incidentally the last team to keep a clean sheet against them was France, in a 2-0 victory in the Nations League in September 2022.
For all their defensive prowess under Deschamps, France have conceded in their opening match in three of the last four tournaments.
Austria’s fast transitions will give them something to think about at the Dusseldorf Arena. Michael Gregoritsch is a 6ft 4in centre-forward, but he can run in behind as well as hold up the ball with his back to goal.
Marcel Sabitzer, Christoph Baumgartner and Konrad Laimer provide a further threat in deeper berths. When you take all that into account, it is worth backing Austria to find the back of the net in this one.

Kylian Mbappe to score any time – Evens (bet365)
Michel Platini stole the show as France won Euro 1984. Zinedine Zidane was at his majestic best when les Bleus lifted the trophy at Euro 2000. Will it be the turn of Kylian Mbappe this summer?
It is hard to see France winning the tournament without the soon-to-be Real Madrid forward being a key contributor.
It could be argued that Antoine Griezmann is actually more important overall, but Mbappe is the man France will look to for inspiration in the final third.
He was disappointing at the last European Championship, when his missed penalty against Switzerland ended France’s participation in the pan-continental competition.
Yet Mbappe showed his class in the World Cup final in winter 2022, scoring a hat-trick to drag France back into the game.
Mbappe can kick-start his Euro 2024 with a goal against Austria on Monday.
