Rodrigo Bentancur issued a groveling apology to his Tottenham teammate Heung-min Son after making ‘a very bad joke’.
The midfielder made headlines this week after appearing on Uruguayan TV show Por La Camiseta where he was chatting about his life in north London.
Bentancur was asked by host, Rafa Cotelo, for the shirt of a Spurs player, to which the Uruguayan replied: “Sonny’s?”
The 26-year-old then added: “It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
As a result of his remark about the South Korean international, Bentancur’s comment went viral leading to criticism aimed at midfielder.
But taking to Instagram to discuss the incident, Bentancur issued a heartfelt apology.
Writing on his story, he wrote: “Sony brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke!
“You know that I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you brother.”
Son has previously been subject to racist abuse during Tottenham’s 2-0 win over West Ham in February 2023.
At the time, a statement from the club said: “We have been made aware of the utterly reprehensible online racist abuse directed at Heung-Min Son during today’s match, which has been reported by the club.
“We stand with Sonny and once again call on the social media companies and authorities to take action.”
Bentancur is currently in Uruguay as he prepares to compete in the Copa America with his country this summer.
Since joining Tottenham in January 2022, Bentancur has made 69 times for Spurs, scoring six goals.
