The only match Switzerland lost in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign was when they already had their place in Germany confirmed.
That defeat to Romania last November remains the only defeat suffered by Murat Yakin’s side since their 2022 World Cup exit, 14 matches ago.
The A-Team have prepared for this, their sixth major competition appearance in a row, by playing four friendlies since the turn of the year, securing victories away at Ireland and at home against Estonia, and drawing away at Denmark and most recently at home with neighbours Austria last weekend.
The Swiss are expected to make it through to the knockout stage, according to the bookies at least, but a positive start against a potential dark horse on Saturday afternoon is crucial.
Hungary also head into the tournament on an impressive run of form, having lost only once in all competitions since September 2022.
Marco Rossi’s side impressed in their qualifying campaign, finishing unbeaten in their group across eight matches which includes doing the double over Serbia.
The Magyars also notably did the double over England (including a 4-0 away win) and won away at Germany in the most recent Nations League campaign a couple of years ago, and are tipped by some to be this year’s dark horses at Euro 2024.
The Hungarians have won four of their last five games in all competitions, suffering a rare defeat in their first of two warm up matches earlier this month against Ireland in Dublin, before returning to winning ways with a 3-0 triumph at home against Israel.
Saturday’s match acts as a huge opportunity for Hungary to get off to the perfect start before they travel to Stuttgart for back to back games, firstly against hosts Germany, before taking on Scotland in their final group game.
Hungary dominate the head-to-head between themselves and Switzerland with 30 wins to 11. The Swiss have won each of the last three encounters though and have lost just one of their last nine against the Magyars, but the two haven’t met since the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
