Spain head into Euro 2024 as one the contenders expected to make it to the latter stages of this summer’s championships, hosted by Germany.
Luis de la Fuente’s side are currently sixth in the favourites list to win what would be a record-breaking fourth European title, having won two of the last four Euros.
The Spaniards make the trip to Germany in confident mood having finished top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group with seven wins from eight matches, and also being crowned Nations League champions for the first time, 12 months ago.
The 2010 world champions started the new calendar year with a defeat to Colombia in London followed by an entertaining 3-3 draw with Brazil in Madrid, but managed to get back to winning ways in recent weeks in their two pre-Euro 2024 friendlies.
The first of which saw La Roja oust Andorra 5-0 in a friendly in Badajoz last week, which included a Mikel Oyarzabal hat trick, before overcoming a slight scare as they came from behind to beat Northern Ireland 5-1 in Mallorca last weekend.
Spain will travel to Gelsenkirchen after Saturday’s opener against Croatia for their second Group B game against Italy in a repeat of the Euro 2012 final, before finishing their group stage campaign in Dusseldorf against Albania.
Croatia head into this summer’s Euros as potential underdogs having reached the semi finals of the World Cup just 18 months ago, four years on from reaching the final of the same tournament in Russia.
Zlatko Dalic is closing in on seven years in charge of his native country, a spell which also saw them reach the final of the Nations League last year, losing on penalties to Saturday’s opponents after a goalless draw in Rotterdam.
Croatia overcame a slight scare in qualifying to secure second place in their group to book an automatic spot in this summer’s Euros, finishing just a point behind Turkey.
The Croats enter the competition on the back of six consecutive victories following back-to-back qualifying defeats in October to Turkey and Wales, and their current winning streak includes victories in both of their warm up matches played this month.
The Vatreni kicked off their warm up matches last week with a comfortable 3-0 home win over North Macedonia in Osijek, before earning a statement away win over tournament contenders Portugal in Oeiras to send them off to Germany in high spirits.
Croatia have never before gone past the quarter finals, and a good start to their campaign on Saturday night in Berlin, followed by positive results in Hamburg against Albania and finally in Leipzig against defending champions Italy could stand in good stead to surpass the last eight this time around.
Spain lead the head-to-head between the two countries 5-3 from their 10 previous meetings, the most recent of which coming in last year’s Nations League final, the previous meeting was a thrilling 5-3 victory for Spain after extra time at the last Euros three years ago in Copenhagen.
