Portugal vs Finland predictions
Portugal were crowned European champions eight years ago and they are looking to repeat the feat this summer.
It is easy to forget now, but Fernando Santos’s side were not overly impressive for much of Euro 2016. Portugal scraped through as one of the best third-place finishers after drawing each of their group games. Both Hungary and Iceland amassed more points in their group.
Portugal then required extra time to get past Croatia and penalties to overcome Poland. A 2-0 victory over Wales in the semis was followed by an extra-time triumph over France in the final. In total, Portugal won one match in 90 minutes at that tournament.
That is not to diminish their achievement. Santos’s side did a job on France in the showpiece event, even though they lost star man Cristiano Ronaldo to injury midway through the first half.
Before Euro 2016 got under way, Portugal were the sixth-favourites at 16/1. This time they are fourth in the betting at 8/1.
Their squad certainly looks stronger in 2024 than it did eight years ago. Ronaldo is past his best yet is still turning out for his country at the ripe old age of 39 (he is not the most senior member of the squad, though, with the 41-year-old Pepe outdoing him on birthdays).
Rui Patricio is another member of the old guard, but Portugal’s best players are in their 20s: Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes and Rafael Leao.
In particular, there is no shortage of attacking talent at the disposal of Domenico Tedesco, who oversaw a perfect qualifying campaign. Portugal were the only nation to win all their games, while a +34 goal difference was substantially higher than everyone else’s.
Portugal are in good shape for the summer and they are definitely among the leading contenders to lift the trophy on July 14.
Before that, Tedesco’s men will pit their wits against Finland, Croatia and the Republic of Ireland in three pre-tournament friendlies.
Portugal vs Finland betting tips
Portugal will expect to register a victory over Finland in this warm-up friendly ahead of Euro 2024.
Portugal -2 handicap – 6/4 (Sky Bet)
Finland’s players will be watching the European Championship from the beach. They took part in the previous edition three years ago but fell short this time around after finishing third in their group, four points behind both Denmark and Slovenia.
Their showing in the most recent Nations League earned them a second chance via the play-offs, but Finland were beaten 4-1 by Wales in the semis.
We should see a similarly comfortable victory for Portugal here. Tedesco’s team lost 2-0 to Slovenia in a friendly in March, but five of their six wins before that were by at least a two-goal margin.

Portugal have strength in depth in virtually every area of the pitch, so it does not really matter what sort of XI they choose here.
Even if Tedesco makes several changes at half-time and in the second period, Portugal will have quality on the field at all times.
This could be a humbling experience for Finland, whose last four away defeats have all been by two clear goals or more.

Portugal to score in both halves – 8/11 (Sky Bet)
Portugal have already whittled their squad down to 26 ahead of the Euro 2024 registration deadline at midnight on Friday.
Unless injury cruelly intervenes, no one will be dropped from the travelling party between now and their opening game against Czech Republic on June 18.
Tedesco is probably still mulling things over when it comes to the starting line-up, however. Strong showings from certain individuals in any of the pre-tournament friendlies could make all the difference.
The likes of Pedro Neto, Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos are outsiders to start against the Czechs as things stand, but even a front three comprising that trio would have enough to breach Finland’s backline either side of the interval.
Portugal can put on a show at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, home of Sporting CP, on Tuesday.

It will be fascinating to see how Tedesco handles Ronaldo at the European Championship. At 39, the Portuguese legend will struggle to play 90 minutes of every match, yet he rarely takes well to being left out of the XI.
Ronaldo’s club campaign came to an end last Friday, as Al Nassr lost the King Cup final to Al Hilal on penalties.
That means he could be held back against Finland to ensure that Ronaldo is in prime condition for the big kick-off later this month.
Goncalo Ramos, the alternative option up front, has not played since May 19, so the Paris Saint-Germain forward is the favourite to get the nod in this one.
Ramos will be keen to make an impression as Portugal begin their preparations for Euro 2024.
