The Euro 2024 favourites start their warm up friendlies for the competition against against a Bosnia side who finished fifth out of six in their qualification group, and who have lost each of their last eight matches when not playing Liechtenstein.
Erling Haaland is the only Premier League player to have scored more goals in all competitions this season than Ollie Watkins, who is expected to get the nod up front for England tonight.
Tonight sees England take on Bosnia in their penultimate match before travelling to Germany for Euro 2024, with their tournament opener taking place next Sunday night against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.
Gareth Southgate’s side are in Tyneside ahead of their first ever match against Bosnia, which will act as his final chance to look at his squad in a match situation before having to cut seven players from his 33-man squad before he must name his final 26-man squad on Friday.
The Three Lions head into this summer’s Euros as favourites to win the trophy for what would be the first time in their history, and will be looking to make the trip to Germany in confident mood with two positive and convincing performances in their matches this week.
England will be looking to get back to winning ways having failed to win either of their home friendlies in the previous international break, losing 1-0 to Brazil before being held to a 2-2 draw by Belgium, both at Wembley.
The beaten finalists from Euro 2020 qualified for this year’s championships by finishing top of Group C of qualification, finishing unbeaten with six wins from eight games against Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta.
The Three Lions have also been placed in Group C for this summer’s Euros, in which they will follow their opening game against Serbia with a match against Denmark in Frankfurt before taking on Slovenia in Cologne in their final group match.
Bosnia make the trip to the north east of England still with a tinge of disappointment lingering over them having failed to qualify for Euro 2024, after their play-off semi-final defeat to Ukraine, marking four European championships in a row having failed to make it out of the play-offs.
The Balkan nation have never qualified for the Euros before as an independent country, and their 11-matches in qualification where overseen by three different managers, which resulted in a fifth-placed finish behind Portugal, Slovakia, Luxembourg and Iceland, and ahead of only Liechtenstein in Group J.
Fortunately, because of their winning Group B3 in the last Nations League campaign, Bosnia were offered another chance of qualification, in which they led their home semi-final against Ukraine until the 85th minute, before conceding twice and seeing their qualification hopes dashed.
The former Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen forward Sergej Barbarez will take charge of his first match in charge of his national team tonight, which is also the 52-year-old’s first managerial job, making tonight’s match his first ever game as manager.
Barbarez takes over a side who have lost each of their last eight matches that have not been against Liechtenstein, and will follow their trip to Newcastle with a match against Italy in Empoli on Sunday before turning turning their attention to their Nations League campaign next season.
