Jose Mourinho might be on the verge of taking up the reins at Fenerbahce – but he is not letting go of his greatest ambition.
The Portuguese coach is understood to have signed a two-year-contract to become manager of the Turkish Super Lig side.
But the ‘Special One’ has reportedly requested a clause in his Fenerbahce contract which would allow him to pursue a special dream.
Mourinho has been out of management since January after he was dismissed by Italian club Roma halfway through a poor campaign.
The contract means he is set to return to the dugout after almost six months out of work.
However, the unique clause he has requested would give him the freedom to leave his post at Fenerbahce in certain circumstances should arise.
Despite his decorated career as a club manager, Mourinho has never before coached on the international stage.
And Italian outlet Calcio Mercato have reported Mourinho wants to ensure he has the chance to coach the Portuguese national team should the opportunity arise again.
Mourinho revealed to journalist Fabrizio Romano that he had previously received two offers to take the reins at Portugal.
One came during his time at Real Madrid – where he said Bernabeu president Florentino Perez shut down the move – and the second time was during his tenure at Roma, when he again refused.
Mourinho also admitted to CNN Romania that it’s a decision he has now come to regret.
“It was a hard decision,” he said about the decision to turn down the Portugal job to take charge of Roma in 2021.
“And wrong, maybe. I think so.”
Mourinho’s management portfolio includes the likes of Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham.
But the 61-year-old now seems to view the Portuguese job as the crowning jewel, and one that it looks as though he would accept – on the third time of asking.
