Tony Finau lines up as defending champion in this week’s Mexico Open and many of the betting community will be quite happy to follow the giant American again.
Finau, who is 17/2 favourite, has finished second and first in the two Mexico Opens at this week’s venue – the Vidanta Vallarta course. The long, flat, wide-open layout has large greens, so encourages low scoring.
With sunny, warm, calm weather forecast for all four days of this week’s event, the competitors should feast on birdies at this straightforward track.
The problem for Finau backers is that his putting has been extremely poor in recent weeks, so he may not be able to convert many of the opportunities he seems bound to set up.
Jon Rahm won this tournament in 2022 and was runner-up last year, but the Spaniard has defected to LIV Golf, so will be absent this week.
We have looked at the tournament and picked out two players who could upstage the market leaders and go a long way at healthy odds.

Mexico Open: Davis Thompson to win & each-way @ 35/1
Former world number one amateur Davis Thompson is deep in the betting for the Mexico Open, but this rising star of the PGA Tour looks set to do plenty of damage.
Thompson followed his magnificent amateur career by winning on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022, progressing to the PGA Tour, where he appears to have settled nicely.
Thompson finished runner-up in The American Express at the start of last year, beaten only by Rahm, quickly proving that he was good enough to contend on the most prestigious tour of them all. Over the last seven months, the 24-year-old has been consistently banking healthy cheques.
A share of 15th place in the Phoenix Open last time out – when Thompson was on the wrong side of a draw bias – was hugely encouraging. He may build on that effort with a maiden PGA Tour title on Sunday.
Mexico Open: Cameron Champ to win & each-way @ 50/1
Cameron Champ is on offer at even bigger odds than Thompson, but both of these big-hitting brutes should be in the thick of things in the final round.
Champ has been narrowly missing cuts at less suitable venues – which is why he is available at such juicy odds – but Vidanta Vallarta is a perfect layout for him.
The powerhouse has finished sixth and eighth in the two Mexico Opens at this track.
Champ has missed six cuts in a row prior to arriving at last year’s Mexico Open, but he carded four rounds in the 60s, revelling in the wide-open spaces of Vallarta.
Champ is a three-time PGA Tour champion who is well capable of making an impact in this week’s low-grade gathering south of the border.
