An upgrade of Jake Paul and Mike Tyson’s fight rules is reportedly in the works.
Tyson’s former opponent Roy Jones Jr, who he fought in an exhibition in 2020, has heard some new information regarding the potential rules of Iron Mike’s July 20 showdown with YouTube star Paul.
Several swirling rumours have suggested that the fight could take place under professional rules, despite Tyson approaching 58 years old as he prepares to return to the ring this summer.
The licensing body for the fight have indicated that Tyson will be forced to go through tests to pass as a professional fighter, but the event’s promoters are still in active pursuit of a sanctioned contest.
Although boxing legend Jones Jr believes Tyson, who has not fought as a professional since losing to Kevin McBride in 2005, could be in for a drastic change.
“The Jake Paul v Mike Tyson fight is not an exhibition, I’ve heard it’s been upgraded to a fight,” Jones Jr said on The Lunch Club.
“If it’s a fight, it’s very intriguing how it may turn out because Jake Paul is now lot better as a boxer these days, but Mike Tyson even at 58 is still Mike Tyson.
“When I boxed him, he still punched like Mike Tyson.
“If he hits anybody square on the chin it’s going to be problematic, I don’t care who it is.
“I like Jake Paul, he’s a good guy and he’s doing good with his boxing stuff.
“I think it’s a good promotional situation for him and Mike, they should go really good numbers, especially having upgraded to a real fight.
“If Mike comes out and does what Mike normally does, then it’s going to be a tough situation for Jake.”
Understandably, multiple concerns have been raised over Tyson competing again given footage emerged of him using a walking stick.
The 57-year-old legend has been posting regular snippets of training footage in an attempt to allay fans’ fears, but it has left much to be desired.
Paul believes he is well within his right to secure the showdown, and has insisted the ex-undisputed champion remains a threat due to his natural power.
Tyson has finally issued a response to the widespread criticism of his appearance, insisting it comes from a place of jealousy given the magnitude of the event.
And ‘Iron’ is clearly still a huge name given he looks set to earn around $20 million for competing in his latest event.
The boxing legend, who retired back in 2005, already suffered a decline at the back end of his professional career which left a sour taste in the mouth of millions of his admirers.
And it will be hoped that he will not succumb to another defeat at the hands of Paul, who has far less experience in the squared circle.
