Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns are apparently the press conference duo the world needs.
The star Timberwolves pair put on a show for the media in a viral exchange following their historic comeback against the Nuggets in Game 7 on Sunday night to advance to the Western Conference finals with a 98-90 win.
It all started with a question about the Timberwolves’ path to this point.
“Usually in NBA history it says you have to lose and lose big before you win. What is it about this team that says…,” the reporter asked.
“We lost last year,” Towns interjected.
“Yeah, but that’s different,” the reporter replied. “You have to lose at a bigger stage, usually. Teams usually lose…”
“It’s the playoffs. We lost last year,” Towns said before laughing.
“We lost the last two years, s–t,” Edwards said.
“Goddamn, how much more we gotta lose,” Towns said, again with a chuckle.
“How much you want us to lose?” Edwards asked with a smile.
“We’ve been losing for 20 years!” Towns said.
“I mean, that’s just the truth, dog,” Edwards followed.
“Goddamn,” Towns said with a laugh to cap the clip.
The reporter’s question certainly meandered a bit before reaching its point since, as the two pointed out, the Timberwolves are perennial losers.
Sure, this marks Minnesota’s first conference finals appearance since Kevin Garnett led the Timberwolves to the sport’s final four in 2004.
But this year marked Minnesota’s third straight season reaching the playoffs, and after two first-round exits — including last year by these same Nuggets — this group finally took the proverbial leap.
“I’ve been here nine years. I’ve talked about wanting to win and do something special here in this organization,” Towns said. “For all the failures and all the things that didn’t materialize, that happened, the disappointment that comes with it, to have this moment where, even this moment to celebrate the wins.
“For me, being nine years, I’ve seen everything and seen it all … to being here, this year, these guys, this team, after all that, it’s super special.”
After this exchange, the reporter finished his question by asking the pair why they’re confident they can advance further and that reaching the conference finals isn’t just their plateau.
The whole exchange played out like an Abbott and Costello routine, a stark contrast to Nuggets coach Mike Malone snapping at a reporter for “stupid ass questions” in a tense moment.
Minnesota has never played in the NBA Finals before but is a -180 favorite at FanDuel to win the Western Conference.
“It starts with our head coach Chris Finch,” Edwards said. “He does a great job of making sure we’re ready to go every night.”
