WWE legend The Undertaker has revealed he once ‘lost it’ during a match and launched a real attack on a fellow wrestler in the ring.
The iconic performer, who dominated WWE during a 30-year career, is remembered as one of the finest characters in all of wrestling.
Though The Phenom enjoyed many a memorable moment, match and storyline over the course of those decades, not everything sits beautifully in the memory.
In a stunning account of one such story, the man behind the black hat and coat, Mark Calaway, has admitted unloading on one opponent for not following instructions during a bout.
Back in 1993 and during what were still Undertaker’s formative years, Calaway was feuding with towering ex-basketball star, Jorge ‘Giant’ Gonzalez.
In theory it was a rivalry for the ages. Gonzalez loomed over the giant Undertaker, but lacked the skills and finesse to make it in the wrestling world.
“It was such a struggle,” the Hall of Famer recalled, via his podcast series.
“It wasn’t his fault. You can only do what you can do and, on paper, what a viable threat to The Undertaker because he’s a foot taller than me.
“I don’t think I had one good match with him… I tried hard, man. I was trying to make chicken salad out of chicken s*** – he was so limited in what he could do.”
Undertaker and Gonzalez did battle many a time, including an infamous match at WrestleMania 9 in 1993 that failed to catch the imagination.
They squared off up and down the road, too, as part of WWE’s relentless tour schedule, with Taker revealing that, exhausted, he finally lost his patience with the powerhouse.
“He snapped me, he made me crack,” he added.
“In the 90’s, I burned the candle, I burned it on both ends, in the middle and on the sides.
“In 93, I’ve got zero juice, No pull, no stroke. We were still doing double shots [two events in a day.]
“I had been telling Jeorge: ‘I don’t care how hard you hit me with the forearm smash, just hit me in the shoulder blades. That’s all I ask. Hit me in the shoulder blades, I’ll sell for you, and we’ll do what we came to do.’
“Every time, he’d pull me down, grab me by the back of my head, and I’m expecting the shot across the shoulder blades, and he’d hit me across the back of the neck.
“I was as patient as long as I could be.”
Undertaker explained he once again talked through the issue at hand with his opponent and made clear what he expected in their matches the following day.
Assured everything that everything was understood, they took the ring again, only for the same drama to unfold – only this time with more disastrous consequences.
The Demon of Death Valley went on: “Five seconds in, he pulls me down and cracks me across the back of the neck. Once I got the feeling back in my fingers, because now I’m getting stingers that are shooting down, I flipped.
“I turned around and started whaling on him. He had no clue. I hit him so fast, so many times, that he couldn’t defend himself. I was p*****.
“He tried to lean back and I’m whaling on him. I could see George The Animal Steele, who was the agent, he’s running up the aisle yelling: ‘Stop! Stop! Stop!
“I went back to the dressing room and was pacing, waiting for him to come back. He came back, he was lumped up, and they held me back. I had lost it.
“I felt bad afterwards… he was limited to what he could do, and I had enough.”
Undertaker at least picked up a victory in the one match against Gonzalez that fans remember most, seeing off the behemoth at Mania 9.
They collided in a final major match later in the same year, the Texan once again claiming victory at SummerSlam.
Fast forward all the way to 2024, he featured once again at WWE’s annual show with an incredible cameo at WrestleMania 40.
