talkSPORT’s Gabby Agbonlahor summed up Aston Villa fans’ feelings after Emiliano Martinez’s bizarre own goal against Liverpool.
Just a minute into a match that Villa need to win to secure Champions League football, the visiting Reds took the lead in bizarre circumstances.
Harvey Elliott sent a cross into the area from the right and Martinez appeared to deal with the pressure but ended up knocking the ball into his own net.
It sparked a nightmare start for Unai Emery’s side, with Villa fan Agbonlahor taking to X to say: “I feel sick.”
Speaking on commentary for talkSPORT, Joe Shennan described the error as: “One of the most remarkable own-goals we’ve seen in the Premier League this season.”
Fortunately for Villa, they soon equalised through a fine strike by Youri Tielemans.
This sparked a more cheerful post from Agbonlahor as he said: “Was a short sickness bug! We’re back UTV!!!”
However, Liverpool regained the lead midway through the first-half when Cody Gakpo tapped in from close-range.
A win will see Villa go seven points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham, who face Manchester City and Sheffield United in their final two games.
Victory would also mark the huge improvement they have made under Emery, even after their Europa Conference League semi-final disappointment last Thursday.
Villa have been one of the surprise packages this season having competed for a top four finish for much of the campaign.
Champions League football would be a deserved reward for their efforts and progress since Emery’s appointment.
