Ipswich v Huddersfield preview
Ipswich head into Saturday lunchtime’s final round of Championship action for the season just 90 minutes away from earning promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2002.
Kieran McKenna’s side are odds on favourites for victory on Saturday, which would make them the first team to earn back-to-back promotions straight from League One to the Premier League since Southampton achieved the feat in 2012.
The Suffolk side got back to winning ways on Tuesday night with a crucial victory at Coventry that leaves them just a point away from the promise land of the Premier League, having not won any of their previous four matches prior to the West Midlands outing.
The Tractor Boys have lost by far the fewest matches in the Championship this season, with only one of their six league defeats this campaign coming on their home patch, which came way back in August.
Huddersfield head into Saturday’s final game still with the slightest of chances of avoiding relegation to League One, just two seasons after being 90 minutes away from the Premier League themselves after reaching the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Andre Breitenreiter’s side currently sit 23rd in the table, three points adrift of safety but in need of a 15-goal swing between Huddersfield’s win and Plymouth’s defeat to play-off chasing Hull, while also hoping Birmingham lose to champions-elect Leicester.
In all likelihood, a win would be too little too late for the Yorkshire side, who look destined to be playing League One football next season for the first time in 13 years having gone winless in their last four matches, winning just one of their last 11 games.
Ipswich have won only one of their last seven matches against Huddersfield, who have won two of the last three meetings between the two sides, which includes a win on their last trip to Portman Road and just one defeat in their last five visits to Suffolk.
