The 2000 Guineas comes to town, and the race understandably revolves around champion 2-year-old CITY OF TROY who looked an absolute monster in three starts last season, winning all three in devastating fashion, including the Superlative Stakes in stunning fashion, and then made light work of his rivals to land the Dewhurst. If he has more to offer as a three-year-old, then he will take some stopping, but at such a short price there isn’t a great deal to be gained by finding out if he has trained on.
The well flaunted statistics of his sire Justify make for fascinating discourse, as his progeny’s strike-rate drops off noticeably from around 30% to around 12% for the Classic generation. On raw talent he will probably win, but with the added factor that Aidan O’Brien doesn’t have his string firing on all cylinders at present he is worth taking on, at least from an each-way perspective at cramped odds.
The joker in the pack could be the Ralph Beckett trained TASK FORCE. He has been exclusively campaigned over 6f to date, winning his first two starts, and then was last seen when staying on strongly to finish runner-up behind Vandeek in the Middle Park Stakes.
The visual perspective of that run was that further will definitely suit, and his pedigree more than backs that up. On paper, he looks a proper miler, and trainer Ralph Beckett is full of enthusiasm over how well he has been working at home over the winter period. He rates and each-way player.
ROSALLION had some very smart form to his name last season, and landed a big prize in France on his final start. He looks like a player here for the Sean Levey and Richard Hannon combination.
Eased to a mark of 130 for this assignment, he looks to have solid each-way claims as he tackles this marathon trip for the first time. Ben Jones is in the saddle for the Cotswold handler, and this combination can get in the shake-up here at an each-way price.
