Scotland vs Switzerland predictions
Avoiding defeat by Germany on the opening night of Euro 2024 would have been a tall order for any team in the competition.
There is no shame in losing to the three-time kings of the continent, especially when they are playing on home soil, but Scotland’s 5-1 defeat on Friday represented a hugely disappointing start to their campaign.
Germany got out of the blocks quickly and Scotland soon found themselves overwhelmed. The defence sat too deep and the midfield positioned itself too high, leaving space in between the lines for the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala to masterfully exploit.
Scotland struggled in possession too. They could not play through Germany’s intense counter-press. That resulted in them being pinned back in their own half for virtually the entire match.
Steve Clarke’s charges did grab a consolation late on, but there was a large slice of good fortune to it as Antonio Rudiger headed the ball into his own net. Anyway, Germany scored their fifth soon after.
Clarke will point to the fact that his team had to play for more than half of the encounter with 10 men, but Ryan Porteous deserved his red card for a horror challenge on Gundogan.
In truth, there were no positives to take from Scotland’s first assignment at Euro 2024. And the scale of the defeat in Munich means they cannot afford to lose here.
Indeed, while a tally of three points is often enough to advance to the knockout rounds in a 24-team competition, a negative goal difference complicates matters immensely.
A victory over Switzerland would bring Scotland right back into contention in Group A. The worry for Clarke and co. is that the thrashing by Germany may have done lasting damage to team morale.
The pressure is on Scotland, who must realistically get something from Wednesday’s match to keep their hopes of a place in the round of 16 alive.
Scotland vs Switzerland betting tips
Switzerland will be looking to build on their opening win when they face Scotland on Wednesday.
Switzerland to win – 17/20 (bet365)
There was a debate before the big kick-off whether or not Switzerland’s experienced core would be a help or a hindrance this summer.
Many felt that there was not enough young talent coming through to supplement the likes of Yann Sommer, Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler and Ricardo Rodriguez, but the tournament knowhow provided by that quartet and others proved invaluable against Hungary.
A 3-1 victory set Switzerland on their way. It was a polished performance from Murat Yakin’s men, who seamlessly switched between 3-4-2-1 and 4-3-3 formations throughout the game.

That tactical flexibility should help them get the better of Scotland at the RheinEnergieStadion. Switzerland also have more talent across the pitch and they looked more coherent last time out, albeit against inferior opposition to the Germany team that Scotland faced.
Switzerland have reached the round of 16 in each of the last five major tournaments. That is the sort of pedigree that could be a factor when they face Scotland, who have never before reached the knockout rounds of any major competition.

Under 2.5 goals – 4/6 (Sky Bet)
Scotland are in a difficult position in Group A. They were too passive against Germany and did not have enough of an impact on the game. But they must be careful to avoid going too far in the other direction against Switzerland.
The Swiss played some really tidy football in their first match. They also demonstrated an ability to control the game through possession. Scotland’s players must remain patient and resist the temptation to break ranks and go chasing after the ball in ones and twos.
Switzerland have the capacity to hold Scotland at arm’s length and they will try to hold the ball high up the pitch in a bid to keep their opponents away from their goal.
With the security provided by having three points already in the bag, the Swiss do not need to go hell for leather here.
This should be an interesting affair – but not necessarily a high-scoring one.
⚽ Tip under 2.5 goals at 4/6 with Sky Bet ⚽
Breel Embolo to score any time – 21/10 (Betfred)
It was hard not to smile when Breel Embolo sealed Switzerland’s victory over Hungary in second-half stoppage time.
The striker only made five appearances for Monaco in 2023/24 after suffering a serious knee injury last year. His outing off the bench on Saturday was his first for his country since the 2022 World Cup.
Embolo does not have the match fitness to start just yet, but he should get more than the 16 minutes he was handed by Yakin at the weekend.
Embolo’s pace in behind and sharpness around the penalty area make him ideally suited to the role of impact substitute, even though the Swiss will hope he is available to start at some point this summer.
Against a Scotland side that was defensively porous against Germany, Embolo can make an impact.
⚽ Tip Breel Embolo to score any time at 21/10 with Betfred ⚽
