Erislandy Lara, boxing’s oldest world champion, is set to fight alongside Canelo Alvarez on a Las Vegas bill.
Lara is 41 and was upgraded to become the WBA middleweight king, before he made a successful first defence of his title in April scoring a vicious KO of Michael Zerafa.
The Cuban still holds the title so is currently the oldest active champion in the sport, and he is set to return on September 14.
He will take on boxing veteran Danny Garcia, in the co-main event on the night at the T-Mobile Arena.
Garcia has fought just once since losing to Errol Spence Jr in 2020, taking a two year break before beating Jose Benavidez Jr in 2022.
‘Swift’ has taken the opportunity to challenge for the WBA title, and will look to dethrone the Cuban from his historic seat as champion.
Lara will feature on the undercard of one of his former rivals Alvarez, who will take on Edgar Berlanga in the headline attraction.
Alvarez and Lara met in 2014 in a showdown which saw the Cuban fall to split decision defeat, which was widely deemed controversial.
It is Garcia’s debut at 160lbs, and it is a match-up that has left fans unsure as to what to expect on the night.
A fight between Garcia and Lara was originally plotted to take place in August 2023.
But the veteran king is excited to grace the ring again, in what he believes will provide some huge entertainment for fans.
He said: “My fight with Danny García will be a classic battle between two legendary fighters of our era.
“We’ve both faced the best, have impressive resumes and have competed at the top level for a long time.
“I look forward to putting on a show and being the first to knock out Danny García. This will be an epic showdown!”
Garcia echoed his sentiments and is eyeing history of his own.
He added: “This is a legacy fight and an opportunity to win a championship in my third weight class.
“Lara is a great champion who’s been around for a while, but so have I.
“On Sept. 14, I’m bringing the Danny García show to Las Vegas and making it a historic night.”
