Ilkay Gundogan showed his loyalty to Manchester City by defending their treble parade celebrations on social media.
The midfielder, who now plays for Barcelona, was an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s squad during their historic success last season.
Gundogan made 51 appearances in all competitions en route to City’s Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup triumphs last term.
He was involved in their celebratory Manchester parade and when seeing those scenes again, he jumped to his former side’s defence.
An account on X posted comparison images between Athletic Bilbao’s recent Copa del Rey celebrations and City’s treble parade.
Bilbao’s win ended their 40-year wait for silverware and thousands of fans watched the team celebrate alongside the Nervion river.
City fans also turned out in their masses in Manchester, but the post seemingly suggested more fans attended the joyous scenes in Spain.
However, Gundogan responded with images of packed crowds, captioning the reply with the eyes emoji and saying: “Come on admin… !”
Guardiola’s side haven’t given a response and the Out of Context Football account even posted a screenshot of Gundogan’s reply, but fans will be happy to see that one of their former players has their backs.
Gundogan’s most crucial contributions in their treble success were his goals against rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
He scored the fastest final goal in the competitions’ history with an outstanding volley after 13 seconds before later netting the winner.
Gundogan made 31 Premier League appearances and played in all 13 of their Champions League matches as City made history.
Following such a memorable final season he left on a free transfer to Barcelona, where he could win LaLiga and the Champions League.
City are also contending for more silverware and could do so by sensationally winning back-to-back trebles.
They sit top of the Premier League but Arsenal will go back above them if they win thei game in hand. Liverpool failed to go back above them as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home Crystal Palace.
A Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid awaits them this week with the aggregate score at 3-3 before they face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday.
