Friday racing tips
- HAYDOCK
2.35: Liberalised 5/2 (1.5pts)
4.20: Persuasion to place 7/4 (1.5pts) - BANGOR
3.20: Baron De Midleton 8/1 Each-way (1pt)
4.30: Bucko’s Boy 10/1 Each-way (1pt) - ASCOT
4.10: Thunder Blue 8/1 Each-way (1.5pts) & Pearle D’Or 11/2 Each-way (2pts)
Liberalised
Twice-raced group filly out of Kodiac who should go better back down to 6f, though wasn’t disgraced when 14/1 5th of 7 at Newmarket in the Group 3 Solera Stakes last month.
She was closer to Arabian Dusk in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket in July, in what was a bunched finish over 6f, where she placed 8th but still under 4 lengths off the winner Arabian Dusk.
1st, 2nd and 3rd in that race are now rated in the 100’s, while 4th, 5th and 6th are in the high 90’s.
Liberalised should be well weighted though and could improve in this contest with that form and despite the penalty from that debut win can make all with that group experience and potential for Karl Burke.
Stormy Impact was 2nd close behind Greydreambeliever in July at York, who went on to Salisbury on Thursday afternoon which could effect her form going forward if she goes on to win there.
But she was heavy odds-on favourite last time and failed to make all, though is now given a big chance with 6lb given by Liberalised.
Persuasion
Only won three times in 36 flat turf attempts but has placed 2nd and 3rd another 16 times, which says a lot.
The gelding, trained by David & Nicola Barron is as consistent as can be in these kind of handicaps, and has been in the top three in the last three runs.
Both of the last two races, at Thirsk finished behind Cerulean Bay.
He’s now dropped another pound to give him a total of a 5lb drop since April 2024.
Only finishing out of the top three on four occasions at the start of the season.
Each drop in the weights should be encouraging for his next run as he’s always capable of being right up there over 7f, but isn’t quite worth the 11/2 price to win.
Not many of these runners who focus on tough handicaps have a huge win rate though, so one of them will get the rare success.
Baron De Midleton
Baron De Midleton could be on a great mark over fences having dropped in the weights in both hurdle and chase disciplines.
But he’s not been seen over fences since December 2023, of which his last two fence starts have resulted in pulling up.
But he won off of a mark of 133 in March 2023 in a Class 3 novice chase at Carlisle, beating Tommy’s Oscar by a neck.
Trainer Brian Ellison has a great strike-rate at the moment too, with 6 wins from just 21 runners in the last two weeks.
He’s weighted to go well if returning to form over fences.
Bucko’s Boy
Won well on first start of 2024 in June to beat Lallygag comfortably and ultimately go up 7lb.
He’s been a respectable 4th in each of his last two runs at his new mark and hasn’t been dropped in the weights since either.
Ought to go well enough to at least place here and does also have a big chance at winning.
Trainer Jamie Snowden has won three of his last ten runs over the last two weeks.
Thunder Blue
A great Blue Point gelding who’s raced 14 times already but has shown he’s capable of being amongst this level.
Placing second at Newcastle last time out and a decent third at Ascot in the Shergar Cup Sprint.
What makes him stand out though is his return to 7f, having been upped to that distance for trainer Dominic Ffrench Davis back in August last year in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes, and was also 8/1 for that before finishing 8th of 9.
Had a brief winter stint in Meydan before switching to Jamie Osborne’s yard who’s been having a great season with stable jockey and daughter Saffie Osborne having an even better campaign of winners.
The horse and jockey already enjoyed success at Wolverhampton and has gone well since even upped in the weights by a pound for that 2nd place.
Pearle d’Or
With the rain it’s key to find a horse who likes the softer ground.
This five-year-old not only has better form on good to soft, also winning at Newbury in September on heavy ground but more notably, has great form at Ascot.
He was upped to a rating of 90 as a result of that heavy ground win and is now 3lb lower than that mark since a few firmer ground losses.
His Ascot record reads 2130 – with the latest just a four length loss in a busy finish to the line in the Victoria Cup.
