Doncaster v Crewe preview
Doncaster’s extraordinary run of form continued in the first leg of their play-off semi final on Monday night as they put one foot in next weekend’s Wembley final with a 2-0 win at Gresty Road against Crewe.
Grant McCann’s side were third-bottom of the League Two table, just one place above the relegation zone, heading into the month of February, before a staggering run of just one defeat in their last 18 regular season matches saw them finish fifth in the table.
13 of those matches ended in victory which saw a hasty climb up the League Two ladder, which includes picking up 31 points out of a possible 33 from their final 11 games of the campaign.
A 2-2 draw at Gillingham on the final day of the season ended the 10-match unbeaten run prior to Monday night’s first leg, were the Yorkshire side promptly got back to winning ways.
Crewe, on the other hand, are on the opposite end of the form spectrum, having won just one of their last 10 matches ahead of Friday night’s second leg, which saw their automatic promotion prospects fall dramatically.
It would take something special for Lee Bell’s side to make the final at Wembley, needing to win by two clear goals at the very least against a side who have won each of their last eight home matches.
The Cheshire side have occupied a top seven position for almost the entirety of the season, breaking into the play-off spots in September before even holding on to an automatic promotion place for much of the campaign.
The two sides were relegated from League One together two seasons ago, and finished level on points this time around with Doncaster finishing one place higher by just one goal in the goal difference column.
Crewe have now lost each of their last two matches against Doncaster ahead of Friday night’s second leg, and have lost on five of their last seven visits to the Eco-Power Stadium.
