Charles Latuperissa certainly raised eyebrows with his ring walk dance routine before his fight with Sultan Al Nuaimi.
The Indonesian fighter’s high-energy entrance to MC Hammer’s ‘Can’t Touch This’ impressed the Dubai crowd at Caesars Palace in November 2019.
However, the action in the fight didn’t match the song title as Latuperissa was floored twice and knocked out within the very first round.
After this fight, he retired from boxing and never danced to the ring again.
For Al Nuaimi, everything went to plan as he completed a successful debut in front of his home crowd in the UAE.
The fledgling super-flyweight expressed his desires to develop and eventually become a legitimate contender in what is a hotly contested division.
Since the win, he has fought a further 11 times, winning them all with his last victory coming in May.
He is now 12-0 (7 KOs) as a result.
However, big-name fighters at 115lbs include Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, Fernando Martinez and Kosei Tanaka.
The stacked division has seen amazing action recently as Rodriguez knocked out Mexican legend Juan Estrada to claim the WBC world title.
Then, Martinez outpointed Japanese icon Kazuto Ioka to unify the WBA and IBF crowns.
Tanaka will be defending his WBO belt later this month too.
Al Nuaimi undoubtedly still has a long way to go before he’s at the level of these great champions.
Now 30, the contender must look to fight outside of the UAE soon if he is to ever reach world level.
All 12 of his fights to date have taken place in his homeland, which is not exactly a hotbed for boxing.
Time will tell if he ever makes the step up.
